Project Description: (version française ci-dessous)
In Bangkok, the Urban Agriculture programme of Kasetsart University (KU) combines research and education. Spearheaded by a team from the building innovation and landscape design units at the Faculty of Architecture, this initiative has installed container-based gardens on several unused roofs across campus. Currently, gardens have been installed on three main campus roofs.
Faculty of Architecture
This 200 m2 roof top was built in 2012 after the mega-floods in Bangkok, sponsored by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation. Previously used as a test site for the thermal performance of roof and vertical gardens, some of the experimental models were applied on site, such as green roof mats, bio-façades and vertical green blocks. The garden was renovated in 2015, with rice paddy in 4 large beds, vegetables, and a trellis for climbing vegetables and fruit. Deep planters are used for trees. The design considered reduction of heat transfer and the use of lightweight materials.
Office of Extension and Training
A 300 m2 garden was established on the fifth floor of the Office of Extension and Training building which serves as a training site, especially in agriculture. The trapezoidal garden consists of vegetable beds, a vegetated covered path, and planters. The beds are designed using lightweight materials like fibre cement board, egg crates as drainage layers, and geotextile to hold natural soil. The covered path acts as a shaded rest space for gardeners from the year-round tropical sun.
University Library
Another pilot project was installed on a 300 m2 part of the rooftop of the main libraryâs new building. The garden consists of a circular gazebo in the middle of an outdoor space for reading and special events. There are three layers of plants surrounding the gazebo: climbing vegetables surrounding the gazebo to protect from the sun, lower planters growing small vegetables, and taller shrubs grown on higher rectangular planters.
The first two gardens are managed by members of the cleaning staff who are willing to take care of them. At the beginning, they received salary for this, but after they were enabled to sell crops to the canteen (especially the popular basil) or faculty members or staff, they earned enough to maintain the garden. In the library project, the garden is divided by section, with office workers from different library sections (along with other volunteers) âowningâ planters in the garden, which they care for, from seeding to harvest; they could even sell some of the surplus crops. Automatic irrigation system is installed in one garden, planned in the other. Buckets for composting leaves are used as fertilizer.

Une Ă©quipe dâenseignants en innovation du bĂątiment et amĂ©nagement paysager de la FacultĂ© dâArchitecture a Ă©tĂ© le fer de lance dâune initiative de reconversion des toits inutilisĂ©s du campus en potagers de dispositifs hors-sol. Pour lâheure, le campus principal compte trois toits vĂ©gĂ©talisĂ©s.
FacultĂ© dâArchitecture
FinancĂ© par la Fondation ThaĂŻlandaise pour la Promotion de la SantĂ©, ce toit-potager de 200 m2 a Ă©tĂ© mis en place en 2012 suite aux inondations ayant frappĂ© Bangkok. Initialement utilisĂ© en tant que site-test des performances thermiques des toits et des jardins verticaux, quelques-uns des dispositifs expĂ©rimentaux, tels que les revĂȘtements isolants de toiture Ă©cologiques, les façades bio-adaptatives et les potagers suspendus, furent alors installĂ©s sur le site.
Les travaux de rĂ©novation effectuĂ©s en 2015 ont permis de planter 4 grandes parcelles de riziculture et de lĂ©gumes, et dâinstaller une pergola pour les lĂ©gumes et arbres fruitiers grimpants. Des jardiniĂšres profondes sont utilisĂ©es pour les arbres. La conception de ce jardin a par ailleurs Ă©tĂ© pensĂ©e en tenant compte de deux Ă©lĂ©ments: la rĂ©duction du transfert de chaleur et lâutilisation de matĂ©riaux lĂ©gers.
Centre de ressources et de formation
Un potager de 300 m2 a Ă©tĂ© installĂ© au cinquiĂšme Ă©tage du bĂątiment abritant le Centre de ressources et de formation et sert de site dâexpĂ©rimentation, principalement agricole. Le jardin trapĂ©zoĂŻdal est composĂ© de parcelles de lĂ©gumes, dâun sentier couvert par la vĂ©gĂ©tation et de jardiniĂšres. Les platebandes de culture sont conçues Ă lâaide de matĂ©riaux lĂ©gers comme des plaques de fibre-ciment, des grilles de type « egg crates » assurant le drainage de lâeau et des tissus gĂ©otextiles pour stabiliser le terrain naturel. Le sentier couvert sert quant Ă lui dâespace de repos ombragĂ© permettant aux jardiniers de se protĂ©ger toute lâannĂ©e du soleil tropical.
BibliothĂšque Universitaire
Un espace de 300 m2 sur le toit du nouveau bĂątiment de la bibliothĂšque principale abrite le troisiĂšme projet-pilote. Le toit-potager est constituĂ© dâun kiosque circulaire situĂ© au centre dâun espace extĂ©rieur rĂ©servĂ© Ă la lecture et Ă lâorganisation dâĂ©vĂ©nements divers. Trois couches de plantes entourent ce pavillon de jardin: des lĂ©gumes grimpants protĂ©geant du soleil, des petites jardiniĂšres dans lesquelles sont cultivĂ©s des lĂ©gumes de taille rĂ©duite et de plus grands arbustes cultivĂ©s dans de grandes jardiniĂšres rectangulaires.
Les deux premiers jardins sont pris en charge par des membres volontaires du personnel de nettoyage. Au dĂ©but, ils ont reçu un salaire en contrepartie du travail effectuĂ©, mais aprĂšs avoir Ă©tĂ© en mesure de vendre les produits rĂ©coltĂ©s Ă la cantine (surtout le cĂ©lĂšbre basilic), aux membres de la FacultĂ© ou au personnel, ils ont gagnĂ© assez pour assurer un entretien autonome du potager. Le jardin de la bibliothĂšque est divisĂ© en plusieurs sections ; certains employĂ©s de la bibliothĂšque, accompagnĂ©s dâautres bĂ©nĂ©voles, assurent ainsi la prise en charge de leurs propres cultures - de lâensemencement jusquâĂ la rĂ©colte - et sont Ă©galement autorisĂ©s Ă vendre les surplus de production. Un systĂšme dâirrigation automatique est installĂ© dans lâun des jardins et est prĂ©vu dans lâautre. Des sceaux de composts obtenus Ă partir des dĂ©chets organiques du potager sont enfin utilisĂ©s comme engrais.
