Spanish Pathway

Once you have taken the Placement Test, you will know your language proficiency level. Your first course is the one listed for your score in the Score Guide. Courses from SPN 101 through SPN 501 must be completed in the sequence outlined below.

Prerequisites vary, and are listed in the Undergraduate calendar. 

 

INTRODUCTORY LEVEL

SPN 101: Introductory Spanish I

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

  •  SPN 302: Spanish for the Tourism Industry
    (may be taken at any time after completion of SPN 201, either concurrently with or after any subsequent SPN course in the sequence. )
  •  SPN 303: Spanish and Fashion
    (may be taken at any time after completion of SPN 201, either concurrently with or after any subsequent SPN course in the sequence. )

SPN 301: Intermediate Spanish I

  • SPN 402: Spanish Conversation and Pronunciation*

SPN 402 may be taken concurrently with any SPN course at the 401 level or above.

Most courses at this level can be taken in any order - check prerequisites in the Undergraduate calendar. 

  • SPN 504: Spanish Language and Culture Through Films (as of 2026/2027)
  • SPN 506: Spanish Audiovisual Translation
  • SPN 510: Effective Writing; SPN 610: Spanish Writing Composition
  • SPN 507: English-Spanish Translation I; SPN 607: English-Spanish Translation II;  SPN 707: Spanish-English Translation
  • SPN 515: Introduction to Business Spanish (Not available to native Spanish speakers) SPN 702: Communication in Business Spanish; SPN 802: Spanish for Business Strategies **Students are strongly advised to complete SPN 515 before completing either SPN 702 or SPN 802. Students who have completed SPN 702 and/or SPN 802 cannot take SPN 515.
  • SPN 601: Advanced Spanish II
  • SPN 704: Latin American Culture I; SPN 804: Latin American Culture II
  • SPN 705: The Boom in Latin American Literature
  • SPN 706: Spanish Graphic Novels (as of 2026/2027)
  • SPN 708: Contemporary Spanish Fiction
  • SPN 710: History of the Spanish Language
  • SPN 803: Latin American Short Story
  • SPN 805: Spanish Language Teaching Methodologies
  • SPN 810: Cultural Context of Writing
