"We Take the Whip and Work": Matrix of Racialized and Gendered Work in Cybersecurity
Summary
Bringing the theories of gendered and racialized organizations into conversation with research on immigration and racialization, this paper offers an intersectional understanding of the experiences of immigrant workers of color in cybersecurity. Building on interviews with 50 foreign-born workers of color in Canada, we examine how workers perceive themselves as ideal workers to shed light on race, nationality, and gender as mechanisms that sustain inequality in cybersecurity. We find that immigrant workers of color accept the most demanding technical positions and heavy workloads while building on model minority tropes of hard work and self-reliance that make them desirable for employers. The findings further highlight the in-between status of participants as “tolerated outsiders” who are desirable workers but can simultaneously evoke threat, informed by broader cultural frameworks as well as the dominant discourse of the security in the cybersecurity sector. Together, these conditions create a racialized technical occupational track with extreme work demands that entrap immigrant workers of color in a process of (gender) racial subordination while contributing to the reproduction of ideological foundations of inequality. Findings further extend the notions of the abstract ideal worker in the context of racialized and gendered organization theories.
