SHIFT: Your Orientation to AAS

Whether you are starting your first semester or pursuing graduate studies, SHIFT is designed to support and simplify your transition. This two-part orientation for students with disabilities walks you through the essentials of navigating Academic Accommodation Support (AAS) while welcoming you into a larger disability community on campus.

Join us to get your AAS questions answered, meet our staff, and connect with peers who get it, so that you feel confident and ready before your classes start.

Open to all postsecondary students: While this program is tailored to 91ε, it is open to all postsecondary students with disabilities, regardless of which college or university you attend.

Part 1: An Introduction to AAS

👥  Open to Students, Parents, and Supporters The transition to university accommodations can feel like a lot of paperwork; we're here to walk you through the registration steps and share tips that help you feel more confident managing your accommodations.

What we’ll cover

  • AAS Overview: Who we are and how we support you.
  • The Registration Process: A step-by-step guide to documentation and registration.
  • University Accommodations: How accommodations work in a university setting vs. high school.
  • Financial Support: Exploring funding options available for students with disabilities.

Note: We’ll send the presentation slides to you in advance! We invite you to take a quick look beforehand so we can discuss and answer your specific questions during the live session.

  • This session is offered in partnership with Summer Jumpstart. Incoming students will receive an email invitation to register for Summer Jumpstart in late July.

Part 2: Connect

🛑 For Students Only Join us on campus to build your community and prepare for university life alongside other incoming students and AAS staff.

What we'll cover

  • Discuss disability community on campus
  • Reflect about how to communicate your accessibility needs and find strategies that work best for you
  • Learn from current students with disabilities about their experiences at 91ε
  • Explore your academic values

Event details

  •   Date: Wednesday, August 19, 2026
  •   Time: 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  •   Location: Student Learning Centre (SLC)

Lunch and snacks will be provided throughout the day.

Built-In Breaks: This program is not structured like a long lecture or a rigid classroom session. We have intentionally built in breaks and flexible time so you can move around, recharge, or rest as needed.

Washrooms: The SLC has a number of accessible all-gender and single-occupancy washrooms. 

Accessibility & Dietary Needs: The registration form includes a section for you to let us know about accessibility requirements and dietary restrictions.

Note: SHIFT Part 2 is for students only. Parents & Supporters: We invite you to sign up for one of the virtual information sessions (SHIFT Part 1), which are designed to answer all of your questions.

AAS at Summer Jumpstart: DIY Fidgets

Can’t make it to SHIFT, or just looking for more ways to connect with AAS?

Join us for our DIY Fidgets session at Summer Jumpstart, 91ε's free pre-orientation program for new students. During this hands-on session, you'll create your own Lego fidget tool, learn how fidgets can support focus and concentration, and meet members of the AAS team.

  •   Time: 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
  •   Location: SLC 4th floor

Summer Jumpstart offers a variety of academic, wellbeing, and community-building sessions, both online and in person. Plus, the more sessions you attend, the more chances you'll have to win raffle prizes.
